Oxford, Alabama (WLJS) --- Officials with the Oxford Police Department say they have charged a man in connection with a September armed robbery case, WLJS News anchor Ed Moore III has learned.
18-year-old Khalil Devadra Smith of Anniston was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree robbery after police say Smith robbed a man and his girlfriend at gunpoint inside their room on September 14 at the Super 8 Motel on 1600 Highway 21 South in Oxford.
According to Oxford Police Lt. L.G. Owens, two other men participated in the robbery along with Smith, but Owens declined to say whether they have been indentified or apprehended because that portion of the investigation is still ongoing.
According to the police report, the male victim told police that he entered his room around 1:10 a.m. Sept. 14, and the suspects followed him in.
The three suspects forced the female victim to go into the bathroom, which she did, Owens said. The male victim was struck in the forehead with either a closed fist or a pistol, Owens said. The police report does not state whether he required medical treatment for his injuries.
The suspects forced the male victim to take his clothes off, Owens said. Smith allegedly took $600 in cash from the victims’ pants pockets and a pair of Nike shoes valued at $110.
The victim’s girlfriend called police from the bathroom, Owens said. The report states the victims recognized the three suspects from Anniston's west side, but could not see if the suspects left the scene on foot or by vehicle.
Smith is currently being held at the Calhoun County Jail in Anniston on $50,000 with a court date set for October 24.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and Anniston police are assisting in the investigation.
